HIV/AIDS - the Alva connection.
Among the many visitors hosted by Graham & Sandra were two nurses from Alva, Joyce Bell and Caroline Izatt. They were able to see for themselves the extent of the problem of HIV / AIDS in South Africa, and the conditions under which the people with that condition live.
That visit, and a subsequent one last year, was made possible through the generous support of the community of Alva and the surrounding areas. This money enabled Joyce and Caroline to purchase medicines and basic hygiene equipment to take with them on their visits.
The photo on the right shows some of the supplies being delivered to the Hospice at Soshanguve. Wherever possible, it is important to buy the medicines, etc. locally as, firstly, there would be delays and difficulties in trying to import them into South Africa and possibly import taxes to be paid and, secondly, goods bought locally support the local economy in South Africa.
Joyce and Caroline have many stories to tell about their trips to South Africa, especially the most recent one in the more remote areas of the Eastern Cape among the Xhosa people, and would be delighted to share them with you. If you would like them to come to your church group or organisation, just give them a call.
The picture below comes from their 2006 visit and shows them delivering supplies to an AIDS hospice at Umthatha in the Eastern Cape.
