Sisanda Mpafi :
Sisanda Mpafi
Sisanda Mpafi was born on 14th March 1979 in Mdantsane, Eastern Cape province. Mdantsane Township is the second biggest in South Africa behind the well known Soweto.
Sisanda is the son of Nomthunzi and Mbulelo Mpafi and is the first born of three sons.

Sisanda started school at Sophakama lower primary school from grade 1 to grade 4 and then went to Mzoxolo High primary school where he did grade 5 to grade 7. Sisanda was very much involved in sport; he played soccer, athletics, drama and was in a school choir.

In 1993 he went to West Bank High school which was a ‘whites-only’ school by then and was in the first group of black students to be admitted in this school as this was the year before the first democratic election in the country. When doing grade 8 he was forced to play rugby as it was the most popular sport in white schools. Fortunately he grew interested in it and loved it and ended up playing for the first team. He also played cricket (first team), athletics and joined the school choir.
In 1994 with the help of one of the teachers, he started the Xhosa drama group, which was a black group.
In 1997 when he was doing matric (grade 12) he was elected as junior prefect and completed his matric same year.

In 1998 he registered with TEEC (Theological Education by Extension College) for a diploma in theology but could not finish it because of finances and had to drop out after two years.

Between 2000 and 2001 he worked with his local congregation and was very much involved with church growth projects and community projects as he was not in school or working.

In 2002 he registered with one of the well known black universities in the country, the University of Fort Hare, for a Bachelor of Theology degree which he completed in 2004, and went on the following year to do his honours degree which he completed the same year.

He was appointed as the deputy chairperson of the Faculty of Theology in 2003 and as an additional executive committee member of the Faculty of Theology the following year.

He continued to play sport in the university, with rugby as his number one passion in sport.

He is currently registered with the University of Pretoria doing his Masters in Practical Theology.

Sisanda has been involved with church life since he was young as he grew up in a church, and was introduced to leadership at an early stage as he was a Sunday school group leader. He was appointed as youth treasurer in his local congregation, a secretary of the young men’s guild, a deacon, and later an elder. He has been involved with the outreach projects of his church such as youth against aids, youth against crime, morality of our time, etc.

He is currently attached with Saints Presbyterian Church, which is a white congregation, and is very much involved with the life of this congregation. Sisanda is eligible for probation next year.
